Abstract

Where does the support for new parties come from, how do they compete against existing parties, and why do only a few new parties endure? The papers in this panel explore these questions, shining a spotlight on key aspects of new party success or failure such media coverage, institutional arrangements and the multi-level nature of politics. Moreover, some papers focus on specific cases such as a new party, the Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance, in one of Europe’s traditionally more stable party systems (Germany), and another once new party, GERB in Bulgaria, that has managed to endure in one of Europe’s most volatile party systems.
