Public Opinion and Political Dynamics

Abstract

In recent years, we have seen the emergence of new cleavages as well as a multidimensionality of party competition that goes beyond traditional ideological differences and oppositions. At the same time in Europe we observe high dynamics in the family of the radical right. The topic intrigues many researchers and is well researched, but there is still no clarity on, for example, why Muslims and Islamophobia play such a significant role in this process. Alongside this, the COVID-19 pandemic that began in 2020, the Russian invasion in Ukraine in 2022, the energy crisis and high inflation have the potential to affect the way citizens of European countries relate to their political systems, including their attitudes towards democracy. This panel examines all these dimensions based on different methodologies, drawing on rich empirical data and offering an in-depth look at different national contexts.
