As the direct effects of climate change and environmental problems are primarily felt at the local level, many have called for climate change adaptation to be a local responsibility. Indeed, local authorities have a major influence on climate change adaptation. Nevertheless, their actions are strongly determined by the national fiscal, legal and policy frameworks in which they are embedded. This panel focuses on the intersection of local governance and climate-related issues. The panel offers different facets of how municipalities address and respond to climate and environmental challenges and emphasise the role of local authorities in shaping climate adaptation and sustainability initiatives.
