Abstract

This panel examines representation and democratic innovation challenges. Specifically it discusses how participatory budgets affect citizens’ populist attitudes; it examines how political attitudes predict youth activism in liberal and illiberal democracies; it examines direct democratic preferences and participation; it explores whether communication can increase empathy and perspective-taking in online discussions; it studies radicalism, identity construction and emotionality in social movements; and it looks into the relationships between violence, anomia, and good governance.
