Methodological advances in the study of statehood and conflict

Abstract

This panel combines different aspects related to fieldwork and the creation of datasets. While doing so, it addresses various conflict respectively sovereignty related empirical settings. This includes, besides others, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the derecognition of statehood as it is happening for entities like Taiwan or Western Sahara, territorial claims by 464 self-determination movements and the unique condition of cities like Jerusalem. In doing so, the panel combines reflections on positionality, ethical, emotional and methodological challenges with the introduction of two datasets and their respective coding. In addition, a contribution focusing on liminal logic while applying focus groups, photovoice and an evaluation questionnaire is part of this panel too. Therefore, this panel combines insights on various issues and discussions related to advances in the study of statehood and conflict in particular, while contributing to broader debates like the one on “emotional sensibility”.
