Citizenship can be negotiated and acted out through various societal practices, which often surpass the boundaries of the nation state. Citizenship practices take different shapes in different contexts, and can be employed to combat social inequalities. For instance, participation in citizen science can help formerly underrepresented people in shaping the policy agenda. If and how citizens engage in such practices, is dependent on how they perceive and experience their citizenship rights and positions. Citizens’ interaction with state authorities equally shape how these practices are being applied, and vice versa, citizenship practices can also impact public authorities’ behavior. This can translate into an interplay between actors’ strife for autonomy and a state’s assimilation policies. It can be observed when voting in regional elections is used as a strategic practice of minorities to obtain documented citizenship. Citizenship practices are multifaceted and reflect the most pressing needs of the marginalized people in society.
