Abstract

In the recent decades, many political parties have been under strain, increasingly exposed to internal and external pressures that have triggered party change, organizationally or programmatically. These pressures have sometimes been linked to internal change such as the take-over of a new leader challenging established party positions or modes of working in the party organization. Sometimes they were related to external developments forcing the party to come to grips with policy issues creating new or reinforcing old divides in the party. This panel brings together case studies on how parties handled these different types of pressure.
