Artificial Intelligence (AI) is seen as one of the most powerful technologies of our times with profound implications for societies, economies, and governments. In recent years major advances in the development and use of AI has generated considerable public controversies about associated benefits and concerns. This panel brings together contributions that examine power, political, and policy aspects of AI in a range of areas including regulation, public sector, and security. These conceptual and empirical papers draw on a number of research fields including policy analysis, Science and Technology Studies, cultural political economy, and security studies. They cover a range of national and regional (European Union) politics and politics. By discussing these diverse contributions on the key questions of emerging power, politics and policy dynamics of AI, the panel aims to set out a future research agenda that critically interrogates topics such as the fourth industrial revolution, technology optimism, return of techno-nationalism, public-private partnerships, and geopolitics of AI.
