Abstract

As climate change policies and sustainability transitions gain momentum, concerns over environmental justice and equity are becoming increasingly central. Urgent climate action is needed, but it often comes with economic and social costs that are not evenly distributed. Vulnerable communities, whether in the Global South or within high-income nations, frequently bear the burden of climate policies, raising questions about fairness, representation, and inclusion in environmental decision-making. Furthermore, the narratives and framings of climate justice in media, policy, and activism play a crucial role in shaping public perceptions and policy responses. This panel explores the intersection of climate action, justice, and equity across different contexts. Papers in this session analyse how normative beliefs shape perceptions of vulnerability in climate policy compliance, how (Italian) climate movements visually represent environmental issues on social media, and how sustainability transitions create tensions between urgency and justice, as revealed through a systematic literature review. Additionally, the presentations examine justice framings in nature-based solutions through discourse analysis and explore how Sub-Saharan African countries navigate the balance between climate commitments and development needs. The papers draw from diverse methodological and regional perspectives, to deepen our understanding of how justice concerns can be meaningfully integrated into climate governance.
