This panel, sponsored by the ECPR Standing Group on Extremism and Democracy, discusses two books recently published by Oxford University Press: Movement Parties of the Far Right by Pietro Castelli Gattinara and Andrea L. P. Pirro and Populist Mobilization by Paris Aslanidis. Both volumes draw attention to a neglected dimension in the study of far-right and populist politics, i.e. collective and non-institutional manifestations of political struggle. Departing from different theoretical approaches and deploying wide-ranging analytical toolkits, these works delve deeper into the ‘production structure’ of different collective actors and assert the importance of mobilization in the protest arena to attain political goals.
