Abstract

In 2022, despite democratic advancements over the past 35 years, 72% of the global population, or 5.7 billion individuals, reside under autocratic regimes. Parallel to this global trend, recent political shifts in Southern Europe have highlighted a growing affinity for authoritarian ideologies, underscored by the rise of far-right parties and movements. This panel seeks to dissect the multifaceted dynamics behind this trend, examining the socio-political, economic, and psychological drivers that are bolstering support for the radical right. By analyzing historical legacies intertwined with contemporary challenges, the discussion aims to uncover the factors leading to a departure from democratic norms. Furthermore, the papers in this panel will assess the relationship between modern populist movements and traditional authoritarian ideologies, contemplating the broader implications for democratic stability in the region. Through a comprehensive and multidimensional analysis, this panel endeavors to provide insights into the challenges Southern Europe faces amidst this authoritarian resurgence.
